GIANFRANCO BACCHI

122nd Commanding Officer
of
Amerigo Vespucci

During his career, Captain Gianfranco Bacchi has taken on numerous roles both in the operational and training fields.

He was the one hundred and twenty-second Commander of the Italian Navy training ship Amerigo Vespucci, the sailing ship launched in 1931 and known throughout the world, from October 2019 to September 2021, the only commander to be in charge of this ship for such a long period.

Passionate about sailing since he was a boy, he has participated in important national and international competitions on various types of boats.

In addition to the sea, the Commander's other great passion is music: his military career did not in fact prevent him from continuing to play the piano, with which he accompanied significant moments of the 2020 Education Campaign on Vespucci.
